Product History

Originally developed in the early 1970s by International Harvester, polyimide foam technology caught the interest of NASA who later furthered its development in an effort to decrease flammability, smoke generation and toxicity of materials used in space environments. The space agency’s search for non-burning, lightweight foam systems led directly to the development of SOLIMIDE polyimide foam – used initially as thermal insulation and cushioning for the space shuttle program.

Today, SOLIMIDE foam continues to be used in demanding aerospace applications for both NASA and European space systems, including the International Space Station, Mars Rover, solar shields and cryogenic tanks. The unique physical properties that were once limited to use in the US space program are now commercially available to serve a variety of thermal and acoustic insulation applications in aircraft, marine, rail, building/construction and commercial industry worldwide.
